The question most parents ask first is simple:
Is using AI cheating?
The honest answer is: sometimes.
That may feel unsatisfying, but it is the truth. AI is not automatically cheating. It depends on what the student is using it for, what the assignment asks them to practice, and whether the AI is supporting the student's thinking or replacing it.
That is the line.
If AI helps the student understand, practice, question, organize, or revise their own work, it can be a learning tool.
If AI does the thinking, writing, solving, or creating for them, it has become a shortcut around the learning.
Kids need that line explained before the habits set in.
Why this matters now
Students are already using AI.
Pew Research Center found that 26% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 had used ChatGPT for schoolwork in 2024. That was double the 13% share in 2023.
Common Sense Media found that seven in 10 youth had used at least one generative AI tool, while many parents were not aware their teens were using it.
So the choice is not really "AI or no AI."
The choice is whether students learn how to use it honestly.
Avoidance and panic will not teach that. A total ban may work for a single assignment. It leaves students unprepared for a world where AI is already built into search, writing tools, office software, and future workplaces.
Students need rules they can actually understand.
The better question
Instead of asking, "Is AI cheating?" ask:
Did AI replace the student's thinking?
That question works across subjects.
If a student asks AI to explain a confusing paragraph, then writes their own answer, that is support.
If a student asks AI to write the answer and turns it in, that is replacement.
If a student asks AI to make practice questions before a test, that is support.
If a student asks AI to solve the homework and copies the steps, that is replacement.
If a student asks AI for feedback on a draft they wrote, that can be support.
If a student asks AI to write the essay, that is replacement.
The tool is not the whole issue. The use is the issue.
A simple three-part rule
Here is a plain-English rule families can use:
AI can help you learn.
AI cannot pretend to be you.
You must be able to explain what you turned in.
That last line matters most. If a student cannot explain the work, defend the choices, or recreate the thinking, they do not own it yet.
Ownership is the goal.
What AI can be allowed to do
Reasonable student uses might include:
- explaining a hard concept in simpler language
- giving examples
- making practice questions
- helping brainstorm ideas
- helping organize notes
- asking quiz questions
- giving feedback on clarity
- checking whether a claim needs a source
- helping a student find what they do not understand yet
These uses still need adult and teacher guidance. But they keep the student in the thinking seat.
The student is still choosing, checking, writing, solving, and explaining.
What AI should not do
Risky or dishonest uses include:
- writing the essay
- solving the full assignment
- creating answers the student cannot explain
- inventing sources
- rewriting work so heavily it no longer sounds like the student
- doing a project the student presents as their own
- hiding AI use when the teacher asked for disclosure
This is where students get into trouble. Not because they touched AI, but because they let it cross the line from support to substitution.
Why students need practice with the rules
A list of rules helps, but it is not enough.
Students need to practice using AI the right way. They need to feel the difference between:
- "Give me the answer"
- "Help me understand the question"
- "Ask me one hint at a time"
- "Quiz me on this"
- "Show me where my reasoning is weak"
- "Tell me what I should verify"
Those are different learning behaviors.
One builds dependence. The other builds judgment.
That is why responsible AI literacy belongs in education. Students need to learn how AI works, where it can be wrong, what privacy risks exist, and how to keep their own effort and authorship intact.
UNESCO's AI Competency Framework for Students points in this direction. It includes human-centered thinking, ethics, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design. In plain English: students need to understand the tool, use it responsibly, and think critically about what it gives them.
A family AI honor code
Try this at home:
- I will not turn in AI work as if it is mine.
- I will use AI to understand, practice, brainstorm, and improve.
- I will check facts before trusting AI.
- I will not put private information into AI tools.
- I will follow my teacher's rules.
- I will be able to explain anything I submit.
That is pro-learning.
The goal
The goal is to teach kids how to use AI without handing over the learning.
The goal is to raise students who can use powerful tools without losing the ability to think.
That is the real line.
