The goal is to teach kids how to keep ownership of their thinking when AI is available.
The goal is to keep AI from doing their thinking for them.
That is the difference parents and teachers are trying to protect, even when the conversation gets messy.
AI can help a student understand a hard idea. It can also write the answer for them.
AI can ask practice questions. It can also let them skip the practice.
AI can give feedback. It can also make a draft sound polished before the student understands what they are saying.
The tool is not the whole issue. The use pattern is the issue.
Teach the "thinking seat"
Students need a simple mental model:
The student stays in the thinking seat.
AI can sit beside them. It can explain, question, suggest, and challenge. But it does not get to take the wheel.
A student is still responsible for:
- understanding the assignment
- making choices
- checking facts
- writing or solving their own work
- explaining their reasoning
- deciding what to submit
If the student cannot explain the work afterward, AI did too much.
Change the prompt
The fastest way to change how kids use AI is to change the kind of help they ask for.
Shortcut prompts sound like:
- "Write my essay."
- "Give me the answer."
- "Solve this."
- "Do this assignment."
Learning prompts sound like:
- "Explain this in simpler words."
- "Ask me a hint, but do not give the answer."
- "Quiz me one question at a time."
- "Show me two examples, then ask me to make my own."
- "What part of my answer is unclear?"
- "What should I verify?"
The second set keeps the student active.
That is the habit to teach.
Use AI for explanation
One of the best uses of AI is explanation.
A student can paste a confusing paragraph, concept, or problem type and ask:
"Explain this like I am in 7th grade. Use one example. Then ask me a question to check if I understand."
That is different from asking for the answer.
The student still has to respond. They still have to show understanding. The AI becomes a tutor-like support, not a replacement.
This is where AI can be genuinely helpful for students who are stuck, embarrassed to ask, or working outside normal school hours.
Use AI for practice
AI can turn notes into practice.
For example:
"Make five practice questions from these notes. Ask one at a time. If I get one wrong, explain the idea and ask a similar question."
That is a strong study use.
It makes the student retrieve information, notice gaps, and try again. It also gives immediate feedback, which is one reason tutoring works.
Research on AI-supported tutoring is still early, but there are promising signs when AI is used to support learning instead of replace it. A Tutor CoPilot study involving 900 tutors and 1,800 K-12 students found that students working with tutors who had AI support were more likely to master topics. The benefit was especially strong for students working with lower-rated tutors.
That matters because the AI was helping the tutor teach better. It was not simply giving students answers.
Use AI for feedback
Feedback is another good use.
A student can write a paragraph and ask:
"Tell me one thing that is clear, one thing that is confusing, and one question a reader might still have. Do not rewrite it for me."
The last sentence matters.
Do not rewrite it for me.
Students need to learn how to ask for feedback without handing over authorship. The point is to improve their own work, not disguise AI's work as theirs.
Use AI for verification
AI should not be treated as the final authority.
Teach students to ask:
- What claims in this answer need checking?
- What keywords should I search?
- What would a reliable source look like?
- What could be wrong here?
This turns AI into a starting point for investigation, not an ending point.
That habit is important. AI can be confident and wrong. Students need to learn that polished language is not proof.
Use AI for reflection
After a student finishes work, AI can help them reflect:
"Ask me three questions to make sure I understand what I just wrote."
or:
"Interview me about this project so I can explain my choices."
If a student can answer those questions, they are closer to owning the work.
If they cannot, that is useful information. It means they need to go back and learn more.
What parents can say
Try this:
"You can use AI to help you learn. You cannot use it to pretend. If you turn something in, you need to be able to explain it."
That is simple enough to remember.
It is also flexible enough to apply across subjects.
What this looks like in practice
A good AI-supported study session might look like this:
- Student reads the assignment.
- Student tries the work first.
- Student asks AI for a hint or explanation.
- Student writes or solves in their own words.
- Student asks AI for feedback.
- Student verifies facts.
- Student explains the final answer out loud.
That is allowed help when the assignment rules permit it.
That is guided learning.
